Chinese President Xi Jinping’s jockeying for the third term that had never happened before when the Secretary General began at the end of last year, but he took another step to secure the position last week. He was ‘elected’ as a representative of the 20th party congress in Guangxi at a meeting at Nanning. The whole process may seem very symbolic, but chosen for the party congress does not always secure the place of XI as the next secretary general.

Alfred Wu, a professor at Lee Kuan Yew’s Public Policy School at the Singapore National University, said, “This might not mean that his election as a 100 percent secretary general, but this is a very firm step. “In 2012, Hu Jintao was elected as a delegation to the 18th party congress, but he could not secure the role of the Secretary General.

But there is no clear successor to XI, which makes his efforts to secure the next term is likely to succeed. His campaign to place a corrupt Chinese official behind bars – with the support of his colleague Zhao Leji – will run with full steam.

On Friday, the central commission for disciplinary inspection said that former president and chief executive of China Merchants Bank, Tian Huiyu, was being investigated. Earlier this week, Tian was deleted by the bank council from his position.

Last September, Xi Jinping launched a round of inspection to the largest state -owned financial institution in China and investment funds for their loan practices.
