Pakistan will recognize the Taliban regime in Afghanistan when there is a consensus, especially regional countries, about this issue, Dawn News quotes Munir Akram, Islamabads UN envoy, said.

Questions about recognition reappeared on Thursday when the UN Security Council chose to establish formal relations with the Afghan government led by the Taliban without extending diplomatic recognition of the regime.

Russian Ambassador Vassily A. Nebenzia said he was forced to distance because efforts to secure approval from the host country for the presence of the UN was ignored.

The Chinese Ambassador Zhang Jun said that since August 2021 when the Taliban arrested Kabul, Afghanistan had entered a new phase and more flexibility needed to handle the situation.

Although Pakistan is the first country to call more flexibility in dealing with new rulers Kabul, Islamabad also has not recognized the Taliban regime, Dawn reported.

Asked whether the UN voting will affect Pakistani’s position on this issue, Akram Ambassador said: “We will do it (recognition) when there is a consensus, especially among regional countries.”

Six direct neighbors Afghanistan met in China next month and this would be one of the main problems in their agenda.

China, Iran, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan will attend the meeting.
