Can Pakistan’s Mohenjo-daro be rescued?

Read Time:1 Minute, 33 Second

Bright blue tarpaulin in the mound of the dead in Mohenjo-Daro is a continuous reminder of the fate of ancient cities in the southern Sindh province of Pakistan. The walls of more than 4,000 years have collapsed. Paris stairs, stupa, large baths and other ruins have been badly damaged.

As historians, archeologists, and students around the world, witnessing the tragedy was revealed, there was a concern that Mohenjo-Daro might not be saved.

The right assessment of damage needs to be done to understand the level of destruction that has occurred. One does not know the complete level of damage. So it is difficult to judge how much can be improved, “said Pooja Thakur, an ancient Indian history professor in Ramjas College, University of Delhi (DU).

Mohenjo-Daro is also at risk of losing the status of UNESCO’s world heritage sites if the site is not restored on time by the Pakistani Archeology Department. This could be a big blow for Pakistan.

This UNESCO status provides protection, funding, and assisting this site in preserving it. In this status, it is the state’s obligation to control various elements such as tourism, creating ecological policies to protect these sites from anything that can cause them to harm. I believe it will be very detrimental for Mohenjo-Daro to lose his status, “said Thakur.

The sophisticated drainage system of the Indus valley civilization is a typical feature of the sites in Mohenjo-Daro. In the past, flood events reportedly played an important role in preventing inundation. But not this time.

Because this drainage system has not been fully explored, they cannot act as defense against such heavy floods. Only the parts and parts of them have been restored until now, “said Syed Ali Nadeem Rezavi, a professor of medieval Indian history and medieval archeology at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).
